Tres Palacios Creek: Septic System Repair and Replacement

The Texas Institute for Applied Environmental Research will invite applications from residential septic system owners for inspection and, if needed, repair or replacement of malfunctioning septic systems in the Tres Palacios Creek watershed.

Background

Tres Palacios Creek, in Matagorda County, flows into Matagorda Bay. Since 2006, its tidal segment has been listed as impaired due to high levels of fecal bacteria and low levels of dissolved oxygen. The Texas Institute for Applied Environmental Research and the Texas Water Resources Institute developed a watershed protection plan, in cooperation with stakeholders, to address the impairments. The plan identified septic systems as a significant source of the impairments.

Project Description

Septic system owners in the watershed will be able to apply for inspection and repair or replacement of malfunctioning systems. The project will select sites on the basis of the risk to water quality and the feasibility of correcting their problems, and provide public outreach and education on properly operating and maintaining septic systems.
