Statement on Smoke from Bastrop County Wildfires

Oct 14, 2015: The main pollutant of concern in smoke is particulate matter, though other pollutants may also be present depending on what is being burned, the moisture content of the product, and fire temperature.

The three particulate matter monitors in central Austin have picked up some of the particulate matter from the smoke at elevated levels with variance hour by hour. We anticipate some locally elevated levels for short periods of time. People who are particularly sensitive to smoke irritation should limit their exposure by staying indoors, using air conditioning, and reducing other sources of indoor particulate pollution, such as cigarettes and burning candles. View today’s hourly particulate matter concentrations.
